Marston's buys Refresh

03 April, 2008

Midlands-based brewer Marston's has bought Refresh UK, which brews ales including Brakspear and Hobgoblin and has partnership agreements with Wadworth, Thatchers, Löwenbräu and Innis & Gunn.

Marston's said it wants to develop a portfolio of well-established premium beer brands to complement its core range, led by Marston's Pedigree, and promised to continue brewing at Refresh's Wychwood Brewery in Witney, Oxfordshire.

Managing director Alistair Darby said: "We plan to develop Refresh's excellent brands as part of our strategy to meet growing consumer demand for premium ales with strong provenance and heritage. We look forward to repeating the success of the Jennings and Ringwood brands with the Refresh portfolio."

Refresh chief executive Rupert Thompson said: "Refresh has achieved a great deal in the eight years since it was founded. It is now the number three supplier of premium bottled ales to supermarkets and Hobgoblin is one of the fastest-growing premium ales in the UK. The next stage in the business's development was likely to involve a link-up with a larger partner or an acquisition.

"Marston's has shown a real commitment to building an exciting range of quality premium ales. I am confident that Marston's will provide a great home for Refresh, allowing its brands and people to develop further."

Refresh is the trading arm of Ryland Thompson – Marston's has bought the company and its subsidiaries.

English wine: a happy harvest for Christmas

Half an hour later they’re crawling over muddy clods with lacerated hands, drenched in claggy juice and cold sweat, as if ploughing through an endurance race.
