Adnams' off-trade move

Adnams is looking to expand in the off-trade in the face of increasingly tough on-trade conditions.

This year the company is launching four premium bottled beers a nd is planning five new Cellar & Kitchen stores , with an eventual target of 30 by 2012.

Executive chairman Jonathan Adnams said: "The beer market was down 4% overall but last year we managed to hold our volumes level with the previous year, so we think that was a pretty good performance.

"In the off-trade we were up 4% on premium bottled beer, which is an increasingly important sector for us. We've got four new products coming out this year for the off-trade. One of them has been in the on-trade before, but the others are entirely new."

Cellar & Kitchen stores - which typically have a product mix of 60% wine and 40% kitchenware and regional foods - will open in Richmond and Southwold soon.

Adnams' operating profit in the year to Dec 31 2007 rose 2.6% to £4.2 million.
