commit ted to us ing more environmentally-friendly packaging, fewer chemicals in the vineyards and reducing its contribution to landfill waste.
The project includes extensive non-vine planting projects , the use of natural fertilisers , packaging its sparkling wine in lighter-weight glass and reducing the number of dividers in wine cases.
Chief winemaker Jeff Clarke said: "As happy as we are with our successes so far, we are still investigating lots of further ways in which we can improve."
Montana was a founding member of New Zealand's first sustainable winegrowing initiative in 1995
and all its vineyards are accredited under Sustainable Winegrowers New Zealand, the latest incarnation of the programme.
Tony Hoksbergen, Montana's general manager for viticulture and wineries, said: "Accreditation is not the end game.
"Our ambition is to get to 100% organic management and we are currently running a series of pilots in our vineyards to work towards achieving this."
