Speaking at the supermarket's spring press tasting, where English wines featured heavily, he said: "Sales are up 92% year on year, and our market share is up 6% - to 40% of those retailers who are measured by Nielsen.
"If we get a decent summer, I think English wine is going to be very good. About four years ago, rosé started to become very popular, and that wasn't a blip but a real trend. English wine - notwithstanding supply constraints, given the 2007 vintage - will continue to perform very well for us."
Nine new additions to the English portfolio were on show at the tasting, including wines from Somborne Valley , Quoins , Bookers Vineyard
and Pebblebed .
