Raising recognition

Connoisseurs love them, but consumers don't always understand German wines. Producers remain undeterred, though, and a selection of brands will be pushing the country's finer points at the show, along with the generic body, Wines of Germany, which is determined to educate people through tastings.

Wines of Germany will once again host the Riesling & Co Room where visitors can taste some of Germany's best Riesling wines as well as world class examples of Pinot Noir. Nicky Forrest, managing director of Wines of Germany in the UK, says: "Our aim is for the Riesling & Co Room to be the place for the trade to come to taste Riesling and Pinot Noir. Over the years we seem to have developed a bit of a cult following, and in 2008 we will have over 60 wines on the stand, all pre-selected in a blind tasting by an independent panel. And once again we will dedicate a section of the stand to presenting a selection of German wines widely available in the high street."

She adds: "In addition, we will continue to organise and host

international reviews showcasing the best wines produced from Riesling and Pinot Noir around the world. "With the aim of promoting the diversity, versatility and world-class quality of these varieties, these sessions are fast becoming the hot ticket of the fair and will take the

form of a series of three comparative tastings held on the stand and tutored by representatives from the estates. Last year's participants included Alsace Wines, Wine Australia, New Zealand Wine, Washington State and Oregon alongside Wines of Germany, the home of Riesling and increasingly a top class producer of Pinot Noir wines."

Zimmerman Graeff & Müller will be showing wines from Mosel producer Kallfelz and Johannisgarten in Bad Kreuznach, Rheinland-Pfalz. The producer and exporter specialises in bulk wine and own-label. Stand G20

Myliko is offering a new range of German wines from Josef Drathen, one of the leading winemaking and sparkling wine producers of the Mosel. Stand D10

Celebrating exceeding its annual goal of one million 9-litre case sales worldwide, Black Tower will launch its new Fizz to the UK market at LIWF. The brand has a range of six styles, including single-serve semi-sparkling Black Tower Fizz. Aimed at younger drinkers, Black Tower Fizz is said to be characterised by its "fresh and lively fruit flavours of pineapple and ripe mango". It comes in a black and silver single-serve 20cl ring-pull Alucan pack which is fully recyclable, lightweight and has a long shelf life. Stand L70

Kendermanns will show its new Special Edition Pinot Noir at the LIWF for the first time. The new Special Edition wine is meant to appeal to the more affluent, knowledgeable UK consumer. "Premium products are currently driving growth," says Reh Kendermann's Nik Schritz, "and our new Special Edition Pinot Noir shows that Germany can produce excellent premium wines to compete on the international stage. Germany is the third-largest Pinot Noir producer after France and the US, and we are well placed to support our customers to take advantage of consumer trends with this dynamic brand. From the Pfalz region, this "smooth and rounded wine has aromas of black cherry and plum, and notes of tobacco and spice from contact with oak." It joins Kendermanns Special EditionPinot Grigio/Chardonnay 2007, "a dry style with aromas of ripe pear and honeydew melon,with good weight in the mid palate and a twist of tangerine freshness on the finish". English wine: a happy harvest for Christmas

All across England and Wales, vineyards are being harvested. Down winding country lanes come armies of welly-wearing conscripts wielding secateurs and buckets, ready to reap the rewards of our vines. Happily they come, their cheeks ruddy with pride. Half an hour later they’re crawling over muddy clods with lacerated hands, drenched in claggy juice and cold sweat, as if ploughing through an endurance race.
