Best of Spain's wines are revealed
Published:  27 June, 2008

The red Rioja Luis Cañas Reserva Especial Amaren 2002 and the white Mas d'en Compte 2006 are the overall winners in this year's New Wave Spanish Wine Awards competition, which took place in London on June 10 and 11.

Rioja outperformed all other regions with 23 wines in the top 124 , but this year's results reveal a more even playing field for Spain. The DOs of Valdeorras, Bierzo, Plá de Bages, Binissalem (Mallorca), Arribes and Méntrida all take a bow, as well as the Vino de la Tierra designations of Extremadura and Cádiz.

The judges were also very impressed with the entries for sherry - 20 are listed, well up from 12 last year, as well as two Montilla wines.

OLN's Tim Atkin led a 16-strong team of judges who put nearly 900 wines under scrutiny. The team included off-trade buyers James Snoxell from Direct Wines, Matt Pym from Majestic and Jonathan Butt of Wine Rack.

A tasting

will be held in London on

July 8.
