Chilean wine match

Chilean winemakers have joined forces with the University of California in Davis to work together on a series of research projects. Research organisations Vinnova and Technovid will team up with the campus to look at issues including

sustainability, energy efficiency, green winemaking, wine flavours and phenolics, as well as the economics of the wine industry. President of Chile Michelle Bachelet and governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger attended a ceremony to celebrate the partnership (below).

Italian wine haul for thieves

Liberty Wines is trying to track down more than 600 cases of Italian wine

stolen recently from a delivery trailer parked near Octavian's bonded warehouse in Hoddesdon, Herts. The wine, worth nearly E50,000, includes 50 cases of Isole E Olena Cepparello 2004 and 79 cases of Livio Felluga Terre Alte 2006. Liberty is asking the trade to be vigilant when offered Italian wines and to contact the company on 020 7720 5350 with any information.

Identity deal for WSTA

The WSTA has agreed a deal with age and identity verification specialist 192 Business Services to help member companies check customer

details. The deal is designed to help companies which sell by phone, online and through mail-order reduce fraudulent purchasing and ensure that people who are under-age cannot buy alcohol. The WSTA has secured a 15% discount on 192 Business Services tariffs for members to buy datasets and programmes enabling multiple ID and†age checks.

Vinexpo Bordeaux new boss

Baron Philippe de Rothschild general manager Xavier de Eizaguirre has been named president of Vinexpo Bordeaux. He replaces Jean-Marie Chadronnier, who presided over the exhibition during the three Vinexpos in Bordeaux in 2003, 2005 and 2007. Vinexpo's board of directors has been replaced by a supervisory board and an executive board. The president of the Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Laurent Courbu, is now the president of the executive board and Robert Beynat, Vinexpo's general executive, becomes its general manager.
