The retailer will close the site, sainsburyswine.co.uk, from the end of July, in preparation for the launch of a non-food sales website early next year.
Extra resources will also be given to the main online grocery site, which will continue to include wine and Champagne.
A company spokesperson told OLN the group was unable to break down online wine sales, but added: "It's a very small proportion of sales. Most people will shop in-store for their wines."
Sainsburywine.co.uk was launched in 2001 as a site for specialist wines.
Meanwhile, Rowan Gormley
(above) has unexpectedly quit his role as managing director of Virgin Wines.
Gormley, who founded the business as Orgasmic Wines in 1999 before Virgin invested in 2000 and Direct Wines took a controlling interest in 2005, has made no comment about his next project.
A Direct Wines spokesman said the company would not be issuing a statement about Gormley's departure.
