Bag-in-box addresses green issues

11 July, 2008

Fairtrade wine producer Fairhills has added a 1-litre bag-in-box format to its portfolio.

The joint venture between Origin Wines and South Africa's Du Toitskloof winery is supplying Pinot Grigio and a Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet Franc blend .

Fairhills chief executive Bernard Fontannaz said green issues had been a factor in the launch.

"As the largest Fairtrade wine supplier in the UK we feel it is our duty to take environmental issues into account when packaging our wine," he said.

"Bag-in-box is not only a convenient addition to our wine range, it also features a recyclable cardboard outer and is lighter to transport around the globe, resulting in a lower carbon footprint."

Waitrose is listing the bag-in-box format with a £6.19 price tag.
