Virginie Taupenot is the new president of the Women and Burgundy Wines Association. The association, which has around 30 members, is a forum for exchanges and discussions on technical subjects related to winemaking and the challenges of managing a wine growing estate. Taupenot, who runs the Taupenot-Merme estate

in Morey-Saint-Denis

with her brother Romain, is taking over from Anne Parent, founding president of the association since 2000.

Morrisons Wine of the Month promotion, introduced in May to bring in a monthly difference to the range, continues with Coteaux du Giennois, a Sauvignon Blanc made by Marc Vappereau in Foucher Lebrun in the tiny appellation of Coteaux du Giennois. The terroir in the area is very similar to the Sancerre, with clay and chalk soils and a relatively cool climate.

The Willi Opitz winery in Austria has created a " hand -picked" logo to go on every back

label, to draw attention to the fact that it harvests all grapes by hand.

Richard Martin and his partner Wendy Chide from Newark in Nottinghamshire have won £36,000 after buying a bottle of Distell's Nederburg wine in Waitrose. The prize was part of Nederburg's latest promotion on all bottles of

the range, giving away a total of 2 million South African Rand, or £140,000. The £36,000 win was one of the top prizes. Consumers will be able to continue redeeming prizes throughout 2008.

Xavier Bizot has been appointed general manager of Tapanappa Wines following a decision to expand the company's market programme .


is introducing the River's Edge range in the UK, consisting of a Sauvignon Blanc 2008, Unwooded Chardonnay 2008 and Tricolore Red 2007 - a Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz/Merlot blend.

English wine: a happy harvest for Christmas

All across England and Wales, vineyards are being harvested. Down winding country lanes come armies of welly-wearing conscripts wielding secateurs and buckets, ready to reap the rewards of our vines. Happily they come, their cheeks ruddy with pride. Half an hour later they’re crawling over muddy clods with lacerated hands, drenched in claggy juice and cold sweat, as if ploughing through an endurance race.
