Somerfield cuts drinks prices in half

Somerfield has embarked on a week-long drinks sale which takes in own-label as well as branded products, some of which are reduced to half price.

Deals include 1-litre bottles of Famous Grouse whisky for £9.99 instead of the usual £14.99, Wolf Blass Yellow Label down £3 to £5.99 and Lindemans Winemakers Release at £3.99, reduced from £7.99.

Grolsch, Budweiser, Coors Light, Stella Artois and San Miguel are included in a deal which allows customers to select and three 4x30cl or 4x33cl packs for £10. Budweiser is also included in a half price deal on its 15x33cl pack, which is down from the regular £15.99 to £7.99.

The offers run until Sept 9.

Somerfield has come top in a blind tasting of white wines under £20 conducted by Benoit Allauzen, sommelier at London’s Greenhouse restaurant.

Retailers nominated their best wines for the Bloomberg-sponsored tasting. Somerfield’s 2007 Montagny Vieilles Vignes from Blason de Bourgogne – currently available for £5.99 – scored nine, beating competitors from Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Selfridges, Marks & Spencer and Harrods.
