Nicolas 'happy' about Oddbins

Nicolas's management is keeping tight-lipped about its immediate plans following parent company Castel's sale of Oddbins to Simon Baile and Henry Young. Eudes Morgan de Riv éry, managing director of Nicolas UK, said: "We are unable to discuss the details of the deal. However we are happy with the outcome of the deal as this will allow Nicolas and Oddbins to pursue their own agendas. It is good that Oddbins has gone to a company with such a passion for wine and a good understanding of what the high street consumers want." Nicolas has a UK estate of 82 branches.

Morrisons recruits wine buyers

Morrisons has strengthened its wine -buying team with two new appointments. Gyles Walker, who joins from Spar, will be wine buyer for Italy, Australia,

southern France and the Rh ône Valley, and Jacqueline Claughton will be responsible for buying wines from France (excluding the Rh ône

and Languedoc -Roussillon), Germany, New Zealand and all sparkling wines.

Chilling out with Strongbow

S&N UK is rolling out an off-trade promotion on

eight, 10, 15 and 20-packs of Strongbow in an effort to encourage consumers to drink the cider chilled at home. From this month, a

text -to -win competition will offer 50 prizes each day, including a £2,000 Smeg fridge .

English wine: a happy harvest for Christmas

All across England and Wales, vineyards are being harvested. Down winding country lanes come armies of welly-wearing conscripts wielding secateurs and buckets, ready to reap the rewards of our vines. Happily they come, their cheeks ruddy with pride. Half an hour later they’re crawling over muddy clods with lacerated hands, drenched in claggy juice and cold sweat, as if ploughing through an endurance race.
