Wines from Rioja is launching a series of promotions with independent retailers this autumn, giving them the chance to apply for generic funding and win an exclusive two -pronged trip to the Spanish region.Participating retailers have been offered a range of POS materials to use in their promotions and up to 50% towards the cost of activities .

WineXcel extends range

WineXcel, the Welsh importer specialising in Chilean wines, has expanded its range with two launches from Maquis, a producer with vineyards in Colchagua

and Casablanca. Calcu and Lien have

rrps of £10 and £14 respectively. Calcu 2006 is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Carmen ère, and 15% Cabernet Franc. Lien 2005 is a blend of 38% Shiraz, 32% Carmen ère, 15% Cabernet Franc, 8% Petit Verdot, and

7% Malbec.

Wine School hopes to expand

Newcastle Wine School has opened its first franchise, in Birmingham, and is looking for more in Leeds and Edinburgh. The independent company, set up by

Chris Powell in 2000, aims to offer accessible wine education, and runs everything from single introductory sessions to 10-week courses.

German wines stay dry

Fans of German wine kept dry in branded Wines of Germany ponchos as the body continued its biggest ever sampling campaign at two concerts at Nottinghamshire's Clumber Park this month. Some 6,000 samples of German wine were poured at the concerts .

Suspected off-licence arson

A fire which badly damaged an off-licence in Huddersfield may have been started deliberately, according to firefighters. Sheepridge Off-licence in Sheepridge Road was undergoing refurbishment work when the blaze started in the early hours of the morning. It suffered heat and smoke damage.
