John Hodges

The Vineyard,

If you had an extra hour in the day what would you do with it?

Probably have a really good lunch, sitting down, in a chair.

Your shop is burning down, what three things do you grab as you leg it out the door?

Quintarelli's Amarone, Vega Sicilia and most importantly the Yquem.

When you're not working how do you seek your thrills?

Strangely enough, drinking wine usually plays a part - when I'm not playing Indiana Jones with the kids on PS3 . Mind you, even then ...

What alcoholic drink do you most resemble?

A bottle of middle-aged claret - getting softer with age but not very mature.

If you could choose one person to be prime minister, who would it be?

Patsy Kensit because a) she's gorgeous, b) she's wasted in Holby City and c) we might actually listen to her.

What's the most unusual thing you've ever done in your job?

Selling Pussy! It's a new addition to our soft drinks portfolio and it's certainly attracted the attention of quite a few people in Dorking.

Is there such a thing as an irresponsible drink?

Well we do sell a couple of rums that are 151 proof. I'd call them pretty irresponsible.

are the most underrated and overrated wines in the UK market?

Underrated is good white Burgundy - Chardonnay the way it should be. Overrated is Australian Shiraz you can stand a spoon up in - I just don't get it.

Tell us something about yourself that would surprise your friends?

I don't really like wine ... no, only kidding.

Can you give us an unusual food and wine-matching tip?

Franz Haas Moscato Rosa and Charbonnel & Walker Ros e

& Violet Creams.

If money was no object, what wine would you jump at buying?

Lots and lots of yummy white Burgundy.

English wine: a happy harvest for Christmas

All across England and Wales, vineyards are being harvested. Down winding country lanes come armies of welly-wearing conscripts wielding secateurs and buckets, ready to reap the rewards of our vines. Happily they come, their cheeks ruddy with pride. Half an hour later they’re crawling over muddy clods with lacerated hands, drenched in claggy juice and cold sweat, as if ploughing through an endurance race.
