New stores emphasise wine-led focus

The Thresher Group has announced plans

to open 15 new stores before Christmas.

There will be five

Wine Racks and 10 more branches

of The Local, signalling an emphasis

on the wine-led and convenience-focused ends of the estate.

The company has not unveiled plans for any

Threshers-branded stores but said this week the new

shops would be the result of site acquisitions rather than conversions.

Thresher has also unveiled a

website for

Wine Rack , which will have an estate of more than 200 by 2009 "as a result of new site acquisitions and an aggressive store conversion programme".

Trading director Lloyd Stephens said: " This is great news for our existing and new customers, as well as offering ­significant growth opportunities for our key suppliers."

The company has also agreed a deal to supply a further 40 BP forecourt shops, bringing the total to 230 by December.

Thresher has exclusive supplier status of all alcohol into BP Connect and BP Express forecourt stores under the Threshers brand. The company is also the exclusive supplier of alcoholic drinks for BP's Simply Connect joint venture with Marks & Spencer.

MP opposes closure of Local branch

A Labour MP is one of 1,000 people in Reading to sign a petition opposing the closure of a Local branch in

Southcote .

In a letter to the Thresher Group, Reading West MP Martin Salter said: " The Local is well used and provides a PayPoint

enabling customers to pay utility bills, council tax and TV licence fees. We hope Thresher will show the same loyalty to

customers and staff

you have been happy to receive

from the people of Southcote. " Thresher blamed the closure plans on rising rent but said it was

"considering the options".
