A sensible drinking message "in all promotional material and public communications", possibly coupled with detailed information about recommended alcohol unit limits

Compulsory signage at entrances and point of sale explaining age verification policies, and a sensible drinking message at each alcohol display area. CCTV to be installed "wherever possible"

Free tastings permitted, but with 12.5cl sample size limits for beer, cider and wine and 2.5cl for spirits. "Care must be taken to ensure that customers do not return for further tastings and run the risk of becoming intoxicated. Opened alcoholic drinks must not be left unattended"

Retailers with a turnover of £5 million should deploy mystery shoppers to check compliance with the code .

Rosé tinted glasses

I was asked recently what I thought the biggest change had been in wine fashion in the past five years. My answer was unequivocal: sales of pink wines. From being a niche that expanded and contracted with the sunshine, rosé has subtly but steadily become a stalwart of many merchants’ ranges, with Provence firmly at the top and asked for by name.
