Independent brewers celebrate annual business awards

Everards Brewery scooped the overall champion title at the Society of Independent Brewers' 2008 Brewing Business Awards this week.

The Leicestershire-based brewer

also won

Best Innovation and Best Use of Electronic Media for its Mission Enjoyable customer service campaign.

Off Licence News sponsored the Best Support for an Off-trade Customer award, which was given to the East Anglian Brewers co-operative for its work with the Real Ale Shop at Branthill Farm, Norfolk.

The Real Ale Shop's Teddy Maufe, who grows the barley for a range of beers from local microbreweries sold in his shop, told OLN: "We are really, really chuffed. It's like David and Goliath - we are championing the tiny players and that's been recognised."

The award was collected at the Ins titute of Directors in London by Mark Riches of Norfolk-based Beeston Brewery, one of the co-operative's 40 members.

Staffordshire's Freedom Brewery cele-brated a double win for Best Packaging Initiative and Best Point of Sale.

Hofmeister may need more than the bear essentials to succeed

So, George The Bear is back. Itís hard for some of us oldies to fathom, but there are those under, say, 40 who canít actually remember Hofmeister and feel the cultural jolt supplied by the return of both the bear and the beer whose marketing campaigns it used to front.
