PASS scheme appoints director

The Proof of Age Standards Scheme has appointed its first director and administrator. Kate Winstanley joins from the Drinkaware Trust where she was director of campaigns and information. She has also worked as head of policy at the Portman Group.

WSET's new business course

The Wine & Spirit Education Trust's new Business & Commercial Knowledge course will take place on April 21-23 at the Odney Club in Cookham, Berkshire. The two-day

course will cost £1,250 per student and will include sessions conducted by

trade figures including Tesco's head of BWS, Dan Jago, FGL's commercial director

Neil Barker

and Constellation's wine director

Simon Thorpe. The WSET has also revealed that Jancis Robinson MW is the presenter for its new Three Minute Wine School .

Driver for D&D

La Gioiosa supplier D&D Wines International has appointed Simon Driver as a retail channel business manager. Driver was previously with Brown Brothers, managing multiple grocery and key convenience store accounts. The Italian brand has won listings with Bargain Booze for its Pinot Grigio and Pinot Grigio Rosé wines in bag-in-box. Both will retail for £15.99.

Fursty Ferret gets the can

Hall & Woodhouse has put its Fursty Ferret ale

in a can for the first time. Tesco is listing

four-packs of the 50cl cans in 300 of its stores.

The ale was first launched as a seasonal beer in 2003 but has become the brewer's biggest seller in bottles.

Thorburn joins Stratford's

Stratford's Wine Agencies has appointed Richard Thorburn, who was previously at Ehrmanns, as national account manager. He will handle the northern national account area and will be responsible for Asda, Co-op, Iceland, Morrisons and Kingsland supermarkets and Nisa Today.

Gallo sponsors affordable art

Gallo Family Vineyards is the official drinks sponsor of the Affordable Art Fair for the second time this year. Taking place at Battersea Park , the event will showcase a

selection of

paintings , prints , sculpture and photography. Visitors will be able to sample Gallo's Turning Leaf wines

and Gallo's wine expert Sylvain Removille will run a series of free 20-minute wine

tasting sessions from 5.30 -9.30pm on Oct 22 and 23.

English wine: a happy harvest for Christmas

All across England and Wales, vineyards are being harvested. Down winding country lanes come armies of welly-wearing conscripts wielding secateurs and buckets, ready to reap the rewards of our vines. Happily they come, their cheeks ruddy with pride. Half an hour later they’re crawling over muddy clods with lacerated hands, drenched in claggy juice and cold sweat, as if ploughing through an endurance race.
