Morrisons expands wine team

Morrisons has strengthened its wine -buying team with the appointment of Simon Cairns, who will be responsible

for France, Spain, Germany and Champagne. Cairns' appointment completes the supermarket's four-strong buying team of Catherine Roffey (rosé and USA), Gyles Walker (Australia, New Zealand, Italy and South Africa) and Jacqueline Claughton (Spain, Chile, Argentina, Portugal, eastern Europe, England and fortifieds).

Web launch for Moreno

Importer Moreno Wines has launched a website to give the UK trade more information about the company and its wines. The new site,, gives the trade access to product information, a page about each of the producers Moreno supplies and news about product launches and events.

New Waitrose openings

Waitrose is to open six new shops by Christmas, in a move it says will create 900 new jobs. The first was due to open yesterday in the new Westfield London development, while the rest will open in locations including Crewkerne, Somerset, Clapham Junction and Chiswick, between now and Dec 4.

Armagnacs widely available

Emporia Brands is making the full range of Armagnacs from the cellars of Comte de Lauvia available through The range includes rare vintages such as 1888, 1893 and 1904.

EU tackles drinking issues

EU spirits producers have joined forces to launch a website that directs consumers to national responsible drinking websites, adapted to their country's culture and traditions. At online users can also learn about alcohol-related issues such as unit measures and recommended maximum drinking levels. The site will feature 13 national websites by the end of 2008, according to the European Spirits Organisation.

Exclusive Burgundies for DLW

Daniel Lambert Wines has exclusively signed up Burgundy's Domaine d'Ardhuy and its sister property Domaine de la Cabotte, close to Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Domaine d'Ardhuy has parcels of land in the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits and Domaine de la Cabotte produces Ch âteauneuf-de-Pape, Côtes du Rhône Villages and Côtes du Rhône wines.

English wine: a happy harvest for Christmas

All across England and Wales, vineyards are being harvested. Down winding country lanes come armies of welly-wearing conscripts wielding secateurs and buckets, ready to reap the rewards of our vines. Happily they come, their cheeks ruddy with pride. Half an hour later they’re crawling over muddy clods with lacerated hands, drenched in claggy juice and cold sweat, as if ploughing through an endurance race.
