Admiral’s Ale from St Austell in Cornwall scooped the prize of winning beer 2008 at the IBC awards ceremony in London, held in association with OLN.
Judge Jeff Evans said: “Admiral’s Ale was the clear favourite. It shone in terms of balance, drinkability and wonderful, fresh flavours.”
Judges also loved the “fun and informative” packaging with its modern Nelson cartoon and details about the beer.
Evans said: “The bottled beer market has never been better. Standards have risen dramatically during the 12 years that the IBC has been running.
“Judges were particularly impressed this year by the advances made by British brewers, who have closed the gap with counterparts in countries such as Belgium and the USA."
