Police: current laws are enough

14 November, 2008

A leading police commander has said the drinks trade does not need more legislation as officers already have enough powers under the Licensing Act.

Simon O'Brien, the Association of Chief Police Officers' new lead on licensing, said at this year's Responsible Drinks Retailing awards: "I'm comfortable with the amount of legislation we have at the moment."

This year's RDR awards, presented in London this week, saw Terry Fieldhouse, owner of three-strong independent chain TC's Mini Mart named best independent retailer.

James Hall & Co - which manages

429 Spar convenience stores - was awarded the prize for best retail chain.

And the Retail Alcohol Standards Group's Community Alcohol Partnership scheme was named best initiative after a four-month pilot in St Neots, Camb s , resulted in a 94% drop in young people found with alcohol.
