Winemaker Giuseppe Rizzardi has spent time working at Bordeaux's Domaine de Chevalier and Chile's Concha y Toro - and when he returned to his family estate he was determined to improve it and help it reach its full potential.
The Rizzardi family started making viticultural improvements in 1998, concentrating on trellising and vine density. It then reviewed its grape mix and reduced it from more than 30 different Italian varieties to focus on Corvina, Rondinella, Sangiovese and Garganega. It also trialled Merlot and Chardonnay, which now make up a substantial portion of
its production .
Vineyard management and vinification have
been improved, with the winery now featuring thermo-conditioned fermentation tanks
carefully selected oak.
Guerrieri Rizzardi president Contessa Maria Cristina Rizzardi said: "This has been
our largest investment programme ever implemented . We were determined to ensure our wines are considered at the top of the quality spectrum in Bardolino, Valpolicella, Soave and Valdadige."
