Carlsberg seeks new brewer for Tetley's

14 November, 2008

Carlsberg UK has said it is looking for northern brewing partners to continue producing Tetley's , after announcing that its historic Leeds brewery would shut in 2011.

A spokesman said: "We are absolutely committed to continuing to brew Tetley's,

ideally in the north, and if a suitable partner can be found in Yorkshire then this would be our clear preference. Our key priority when selecting a brewing partner will be to ensure that the taste and quality of Tetley's

will remain unchanged."

The closure has long been anticipated and follows a review of Carlsberg's supply chain. Some 170 jobs will be affected. The company said it

faced "increasingly challenging market conditions" resulting from falling consumption, higher duties, inflation and regulatory pressure.

Camra has attacked the planned closure. Vice chairman Bob Stukins said: "We have a two-year window of opportunity before the brewery gates are set to close . We will be supporting anyone who has a plan to keep the mash tuns running."
