Harpers acquired by William Reed Business Media

Harpers has been acquired by Off Licence News publisher William Reed Business Media (WRBM).

The deal, which was completed last Friday, also includes the Harpers Directory and the title’s website.

All members of the Harpers editorial, website and sales teams are being relocated to WRBM’s head office in West Sussex.

Andrew Reed, managing director of WRBM’s drinks division, said: “It has been a long-term ambition to add Harpers to the stable and we are delighted to have achieved this albeit 130 years down the line. The opportunity clearly lies in enhancing Harpers’ reputation as the information source for the drinks industry.” WRBM will be conducting in-depth research to see how the industry would like their information needs met in the future.

Reed also stressed that WRBM would welcome any comments from the industry.

Harpers will join WRBM’s existing portfolio, which includes Wine & Spirit, Morning Advertiser, Off Licence News, The Grocer and Restaurant magazine.

WRBM also owns the world’s foremost wine competition, the International Wine Challenge and runs a number of drinks-related events including the Responsible Drinks Retailing Awards, The Merchant Awards and The Restaurant Show.

Rosé tinted glasses

I was asked recently what I thought the biggest change had been in wine fashion in the past five years. My answer was unequivocal: sales of pink wines. From being a niche that expanded and contracted with the sunshine, rosé has subtly but steadily become a stalwart of many merchants’ ranges, with Provence firmly at the top and asked for by name.
