The wine retailer said that like for like UK sales were down 2.9% for the 10 weeks of trading from Oct 28 to Jan 5. The decline has been blamed on falling orders from business clients.
Chief executive Steve Lewis said: “We saw modest growth in sales to our private customers over the Christmas period. Sales to businesses, especially of Champagne, were down on last year as they continued to rein in their spending.”
Champagne generally is thought to have had a troubled Christmas. Off-trade volumes were already down 2% in the year to October and many retailers were expecting to see shoppers switch to cheaper sparkling wines for the festive period.
Nielsen is likely to release its data for the Christmas sales period late next week.
