Home Office minister Alan Campbell has revealed that Designated Public Place Orders to prohibit street drinking had been imposed in 654 places.
Some authorities have chosen to ban drinking in all the public places for which they have responsibility, while others have chosen town centre zones or neighbourhoods where antisocial behaviour is a problem.
A full list of the councils which have implemented the orders can be
accessed at: http://www.crimereduction.homeoffice.gov.uk/alcoholorders/alcoholorders09.htm.
The Home Office has also confirmed that it has spent less than £10,000 on advertising and information material on Alcohol Disorder Zones.
Home Secretary Jacqui Smith supplied the figure in response to a question from outgoing Shadow Home Secretary Dominic Grieve.
