Pouch for Fairtrade wine brand

Thandi, the South African Fairtrade wine brand, is introducing a 1.5-litre pouch.

The launch coincides with Fairtrade Fortnight (Feb 23-March 8) and will initially be available in Sauvignon Semillon and Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot varieties with a RRP of £10.49.

Thandi claims the package’s carbon footprint is 80% lower than the same wine in two glass bottles, and is 20 times lighter. It is also cheaper to transport and takes up less landfill space, though it cannot be recycled.

Thandi general manager Vernon Henn said: “As an ethical, Fairtrade brand we take environmental concerns very seriously and it is vital that we take this into account when packaging our wine. By launching Thandi wine in a pouch we are drastically reducing our overall carbon footprint and offering consumers a convenient alternative that has a lower environmental impact than glass bottles.”

Thandi became the first Fairtrade accredited wine in 2003 and since then has been a strong advocate of ethical trading and social transformation.
