Gordon Brown was responding to proposals made by chief medical officer Sir Liam Donaldson to introduce a minimum price per unit of alcohol of 50p.
The move would give a 14% abv bottle of wine a minimum price of £5.36 and take a 24-pack of Stella Artois to at least £26.40.
The Prime Minister said: ďAs we crack down on binge and under-age drinking, itís also right that we take action that is properly targeted and effective.
ďWe donít want the sensible majority of moderate drinkers to have to pay more or suffer because of the excesses of a small minority.
ďThat is the context on which we look at the problems the chief medical officer has raised.Ē
