Castel calls in wine consultants

Castel has called in the services of three external consultants to further improve the quality of its Châteaux & Domaines range, which takes in 18 properties.

The French giant has recruited Antoine Médeville, Eric Boissenot and Olivier Dauga.

Médeville has been working at the Château Barreyres and Château d’Arcins estates, where he has advised the planting of Petit Verdot.

Boissenot is employed by premier crus classés in the Médoc, namely Margaux, Lafite Rothschild, Latour and Mouton Rothschild, and has been assisting winemakers at Castel's Château Tour Prignac.

Dauga will consult on the production of wines from the Château Mirefleurs and Château de Goëlane estates.

He said: "If you simply make a wine, your business will not succeed. You need a lot of imagination beyond the production, and you have to do a hundred things at the same time.

"Most winemakers don’t have the time to do all this, and that is where I come in.”

Rosé tinted glasses

I was asked recently what I thought the biggest change had been in wine fashion in the past five years. My answer was unequivocal: sales of pink wines. From being a niche that expanded and contracted with the sunshine, rosé has subtly but steadily become a stalwart of many merchants’ ranges, with Provence firmly at the top and asked for by name.
