ACS calls for credit support

The Association of Convenience Stores has called on the government to underwrite credit insurance to ease pressure on small shops. Chief executive James Lowman said: "We are calling for the government to underwrite credit insurance. Many local shops have built their businesses up based on access to credit from their suppliers, and this has become increasingly restricted in the recession."

He added: "In a survey of nearly 400 members we found that not one business had benefited from government schemes to open up lending from banks."

The ACS made the call in its Budget submission, in which it also asked for a freeze in the national minimum wage.

Magners extends rugby support

Magners has extended its sponsorship of the Magners League for a further two years. The agreement will see Magners continue as title sponsor of the Celtic Rugby competition until at least May 2011. The renewal comes as the company pledged a heavyweight marketing plan for its Pear variant, which hit the shelves earlier this month. Marketing manager Scott Fairbairn said: "From May 1, Pear will be supported by an above and below -the -line marketing plan, PR and huge sampling. " He admitted that Magners Pear had come late to the market, which allowed rival brand Bulmers to take some of its share.

Bewes joins Hallgarten Druitt

Andrew Bewes is to join Hallgarten Druitt from Liberty Wines as the agency's new commercial director. Bewes spent four years at Liberty as commercial director, and before that had a 12-year stint at Berkmann Wine Cellars, where his roles included sales & marketing director. Hallgarten Druitt's managing director John Cunynghame said: "Andrew's appointment is a testament both to our confidence in the future and to our determination to continue to develop our business. He brings a wealth of experience to us."
