The seasonally-adjusted value of total retail sales was 2.5% ahead of June 2008, with volume sales up 2.9%.
The quarter from March to June showed a 1.3% volume increase on the corresponding period a year ago, and a 1.4% rise in value.
Growth was led by outlets classified as “predominantly food stores”, which saw a value sales increase of 6.5% in June against the same month in 2008.
Estimated prices were 0.2% lower than a year earlier.
The average weekly value of retail sales over the internet was £179.8 million in June, 3.3% of the total retail market.
