Event targets wine lovers with a conscience

18 November, 2009

Wine lovers “with a conscience” are being urged to visit the annual Fairtrade Wine tasting at Vinopolis tomorrow.

The event, which starts at 6pm, will be hosted by wine expert and TV presenter Jaspar Corbett.

Visitors will be invited to judge the quality of wines and vote for their overall favourite. This wine will be presented with a People’s Choice Trophy by Jaspar at the end of the evening.

In total there will be around 100 Fairtrade wines to try from Argentina, South Africa and Chile.

There will also be an opportunity to meet representatives of the Fairtrade Foundation and beneficiaries of Fairtrade.

New at this year’s tasting will be the inclusion of a Fairtrade Village, where visitors can sample and buy products from non-wine exhibitors in the ‘Fairtrade Village’ area of The Gallery. These include: Café Direct, Freeminer Brewery, Fairtrade Spirits Company and the Organic Seed and Bean Company.

Tickets cost £10 and are available at www.vinopolis.co.uk/specialevents/fairtrade.php.

What makes wine special

Reaching the 50th instalment of Hemming’s Way is hardly the biggest milestone, but I don’t need much of an excuse to pour myself a glass of champagne before getting dressed. It’s a better reason than I had for all 49 other instalments, anyway. Not that that stopped me.
