The draft code includes measures to curb supermarket price promotions and provisions to give local authorities extra powers to target problem premises?.
A Home Office spokesman would not confirm the actual date, but said the consultation “will be soon”.
“We are looking at a mandatory code that will essentially outlaw irresponsible promotions, the kind of promotions that lead people to drink more than they perhaps wanted to or target certain groups of people such as women,” he said.
“We have created a consultation on that code – it is not going to be this week but it will be soon.”?WSTA spokesman Gavin Partington said the consultation would be likely to run for three months, with the results expected to emerge in autumn.
Sally Keeble, the Labour MP for Northampton North, is launching her own consultation into public attitudes to drinking and how to tackle alcohol issues. The consultation is to be unveiled on Tuesday and is expected to take the form of an interactive online questionnaire.
