Specialist wine bottler Kingsland Wines & Spirits is producing the 300g bottle in partnership with Quinn Glass, and ?is? introducing it across Tesco’s range of entry-level New World own-label wines.
The retailer is phasing in the launch of the bottle, with own-label Australian wine making the switch initially. The move will reduce Tesco’s glass consumption by 560 tonnes a year.
Andrew Gale, Tesco BWS category technical manager, said: “Customers tell us they’re happy to buy lighter bottles, so it’s unnecessary to support marketing through glass weight.
“We are also working with suppliers to discourage the use of heavyweight bottles, even on branded products.”?The project is the latest stage in Tesco’s strategy to significantly reduce its carbon emissions from wines, which has resulted in the majority of its New World wines being shipped in bulk and bottled in the UK.
Kingsland said the Co-op was also committed to phasing in the bottle over the next year. The project to produce the bottle – which represents a 30% saving in glass over a standard bottle – is being backed by the Waste & Resources Action Programme.
The new bottle has the same impact resistance as standard bottles, and offered the same aesthetics, shape and size to retailers and brand owners, according to Kingsland.
Supply chain director Michael Forde said: “The project has taken almost two years due to the need to make the lightweight bottle look and perform in the same way as a standard bottle. We believe this bottle will become the future not just for UK-filled wine, but also as a guide for global production.”?Kingsland estimates that if all of its customers switched to the new bottle the reduction in glass usage would cut carbon dioxide emissions by 2,500 tonnes a year.
