Environmental first for SA

30 April, 2010

The South African wine industry has launched a sustainability seal, guaranteeing environmentally sensitive production.

It allows wineries with Integrated Production of Wine accreditation to use the logo to show their commitment to protecting the environment.

Issued by the Wine & Spirit Board, each seal carries a serial number, which can be used to trace the bottle back to source and confirm the integrity of its production.

“The new seal will give another boost to South Africa’s widely recognised position as a leader in the production integrity of wine,” said WOSA chief executive Su Birch.

“Other countries are introducing similar initiatives but, at this stage, South Africa is the only country which has the means to implement and certify the concept across the entire industry.”

Welcoming the wine rookie

It’s all true. Wine writers loaf around in a state of partial inebriation and partial undress, bitching about having to taste free wine all day and using recondite words like malolactic, terroir and recondite.
