Well over 10,000 wines from 46 countries, including Lebanon, China and Thailand, were tasted by the judges. This year saw global wine expert and TV personality Oz Clarke sitting alongside co-chairmen Tim Atkin MW, Sam Harrop MW, Charles Metcalfe, Derek Smedley MW and overseas co-chairman Victor de la Serna from Spain.
Event director Chris Ashton said: “The quality of wines surpassed everyone’s expectations this year. Producers know winning an IWC award means their wine’s excellence is recognised and it drives awareness for their wines on a global scale.”?The 2010 medal winners will receive additional exposure by being featured on the new IWC iPhone app.
Ashton said the travel chaos from the Icelandic volcano meant some judges from Japan weren’t able to make the tasting.
“But we had judges from Australia, Chile and North America, and one sake judge was so keen not to miss out he drove all the way from Holland,” he added.
The results will be announced at the London International Wine Fair on May 18 at 11am, on stand I10 at Excel.
