Oz wine families’ first tastings Australia’s First Families of Wine is to hold a series of trade tastings and masterclasses in the UK in the week

eading up to the London International Wine Fair. Simultaneous events will be held in Edinburgh, Manchester and Bristol on May 11, with a London tasting on?May 14. The events are the first major activity for the AFFW, formed by a group of 12 companies including d’Arenberg, de Bortoli and McWilliam’s.

Waitrose goes MediterraneanWaitrose is to hold its second Mediterranean Wine Showcase from April 7 to May 11. As well as focusing on Spanish, Italian and southern French wines, the push will include wines from Slovenia, Croatia, Lebanon, Kosovo and Montenegro. The promotion features?special parcels of Prosecco and wines from Greece.

Customs raids stores in Kent?An HMRC raid on two stores in Gillingham, Kent, resulted in the seizure of 670 litres of Italian wine and 475 litres of spirits in a suspected duty fraud case. HMRC estimated the evaded duty on the drink amounted to at least £4,600.

Spanish wine tasting successWines From Spain has said it achieved record attendance at its recent annual trade tasting in London. Some 830 visitors tasted wines from 90 exhibitors covering 61 regions of the country. Director Maria José Sevilla said: “The determination of both producers and importers to maintain Spain’s advantage during difficult trading times received resounding approval from a quality audience.”

English wine: a happy harvest for Christmas

All across England and Wales, vineyards are being harvested. Down winding country lanes come armies of welly-wearing conscripts wielding secateurs and buckets, ready to reap the rewards of our vines. Happily they come, their cheeks ruddy with pride. Half an hour later they’re crawling over muddy clods with lacerated hands, drenched in claggy juice and cold sweat, as if ploughing through an endurance race.
