McGuigan’s ‘aromatic’ Semillon

McGuigan Wines is rolling out what it claims is a more aromatic style of Semillon to challenge New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs.

The Semillon Blanc, which will be available exclusively through Tesco from July, has been developed to “reinvigorate the Australian white wine category”, and is made from 100% Semillon grapes with an abv of 11%.

Dan Jago, Tesco category director for beers, wines and spirits, described the launch as the “most exciting thing to come out of Australia in five years”.

He told OLN: “For me, it’s the Holy Grail. It’s light in alcohol and gives refreshment. It has all the enjoyment you get from a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.

“Australia has been struggling and I think it is at its best when it’s on the ropes. It is a born fighter.”?McGuigan Wines chief winemaker Neil McGuigan said the aim had been “to make a more user-friendly expression of one of Australia’s classic grape varieties”.

He added: “The challenge was put to create the New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc killer – a totally new style of Semillon, with lifted aromatics, elegance and length.

“Australian producers have got to stop whingeing and get on with the job. UK consumers love Australia, all we’ve got to do is create something they want.

“That’s what we’re doing with the Semillon and we’re going to do it with red, too.”
