Vin de France designation hailed as saviour of sector

28 May, 2010

Nicolas owner Castel Frères has heralded the new Vin de France declaration a “godsend” for the French wine industry.

The company is releasing a range of varietal Vin de France wines under the name Famille Castel, aimed at major retailers, and has declared its intention to “conquer” the UK wine market.

“We need to carve our own niche in the branded wines sector,” said group managing director Alain Castel. “The new regulations could be a godsend for French wines. They will give us a chance to win back market share which was lost to competition from the New World.”?The new EU regulations permit the use of varietal grape names and remove the need for a geographical indicator.
