The certification is an indicator that the natural cork used in Sainsbury’s drinks products comes from the world’s most sustainably managed cork forests.
Certified corks will be stamped with the FSC logo as a signal to consumers of their origin.
Sainsbury’s winemaker Barry Dick said: “Our shift to FSC-certified corks will make a huge difference, when you consider that we sell over 6 million bottles sealed with cork closures every year.”?Sainsbury’s plans to use only FSC-certified cork by the end of 2010, with the first bottles on stream by the end of January.
Charles Thwaites, executive director of FSC UK, said: “We hope Sainsbury’s example will tempt
other companies to make similar commitments.”
