History in the makingFuller’s has launched a bottled India Pale Ale in response to growing consumer interest in the beer style. Bengal Lancer will be available as a bottle-conditioned beer at 5.3% abv. It will appear in the off-trade in March. Head brewer John Keeling said: “In crafting this beer, we were inspired by the flavours that brewers working 200 years ago would have tasted in their IPAs and have tried to use ingredients as close to the varieties of the time as we could source.”??Co-op pushes Fairtrade ales The Co-op will be promoting Fairtrade ales Bumble Bee Honey and Organic Premium, during Fairtrade Fortnight, which runs from February 22 to March 7. The beers are brewed for the multiple by Freeminer, based in the Forest of Dean. Vicky Wood, development manager for beverages at the Co-op, said: “Our Fartrade bottled beers are performing very strongly and we anticipate sales to increase further following our expansion into Somerfield stores.”??Community heroes soughtThe Association of Convenience Stores has launched its Community Heroes Award for 2010. In its fifth year, the award recognises retailers and their staff who have made a real difference to their community within the past year. Along with being crowned this year’s Community Hero, the winner will be awarded a cheque for £1,000.

Romance is cut price at Co-opAmong the Co-op’s offers in the run-up to Valentine’s Day are £5 off Prosecco Nerello Mascalese Rosé (normally £9.99), £6 off Codorníu Extra Brut Rosado (normally £11.99) and Charles Orban Brut Champagne at £13 (normally £26). All offers will run until February 16.

Tee off at FWD eventThe Federation of Wholesale Distributors will hold its annual conference and golf day at the Forest of Arden Hotel in Warwickshire on May 10 and 11. The event will be hosted by John Humphrys of Radio 4’s Today programme and will feature speakers from A-B Inbev, Booker, Nielsen and Palmer & Harvey.

Laurent-Perrier in the pinkLaurent-Perrier has created a limited-edition “stylish pink” gift set containing four Champagne glasses and a 75cl bottle of Laurent-Perrier Cuvée Rosé. It will be available from Harrods, Fortnum & Mason and Selfridges, with a price tag of £95.

Chilean wine carbon neutralIn the January 22 issue of OLN we stated that Wakefield Wines’ Eighty Acres range had become the world’s first carbon- neutral wine range. Berkmann Wine Cellars has asked us to point out that its De Martino Chilean agency was certified carbon neutral in March last year.

English wine: a happy harvest for Christmas

All across England and Wales, vineyards are being harvested. Down winding country lanes come armies of welly-wearing conscripts wielding secateurs and buckets, ready to reap the rewards of our vines. Happily they come, their cheeks ruddy with pride. Half an hour later they’re crawling over muddy clods with lacerated hands, drenched in claggy juice and cold sweat, as if ploughing through an endurance race.
