Papagayo updates Fairtrade credentials

Fairtrade and organic rum? Papagayo? is being given a major push ahead of next year’s Fairtrade Fortnight?.

The range will receive a face

ift with the introduction of new eye-catching labels. Fresh literature will be created for distribution at a host of consumer events where the three Papagayo styles – Golden?, White and Spiced rum – will be available for tasting.

Chris Parker, managing director of the Organic Spirits Company, said: “We aim to give all possible support to retailers around Fairtrade Fortnight running from February 22 to March 7.

We will tell the Fairtrade story, highlighting the benefits for producers and the environment.”?More than 800 families from a remote area of Paraguay are involved in the production of Papagayo. The Fairtrade premium has enabled the co-operative to buy its own weighing station, ensuring they are always paid for the correct weight of sugar cane. It also funded free primary education, computer equipment, a doctor’s surgery and a dentist.

English wine: a happy harvest for Christmas

All across England and Wales, vineyards are being harvested. Down winding country lanes come armies of welly-wearing conscripts wielding secateurs and buckets, ready to reap the rewards of our vines. Happily they come, their cheeks ruddy with pride. Half an hour later they’re crawling over muddy clods with lacerated hands, drenched in claggy juice and cold sweat, as if ploughing through an endurance race.
