Grimsby shop loses licence?An off-licence in Grimsby has had its licence revoked after selling alcohol to children as young as 12. Police gave evidence to a licensing sub-?committee hearing that children gave passwords to staff at Jax News & Booze in Cartergate in the town, and were sent to a rear entrance to be supplied with alcohol. Evidence from the Education Welfare Service reported children were arriving at a local school drunk on alcohol obtained from the shop, which has since been renamed Cartergate News & Booze. Licence holder Thambiah Rameshkumar said he would appeal against the decision.

Makro offers via texts?Makro is running a four-week campaign?of rolling offers which will be communicated to retail customers by?text message a few days beforehand.

Laithwaites picks out Oz wine?Hickinbotham Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon from McLaren Vale was?named Wine of the Show at Laithwaites’ 40th anniversary consumer wine show held in London recently.Three of the top 12 wines were from Australia. Australian wine buyer Thomas Woolrych said: “We’ve been working hard on promoting the quality regional Australia has to offer and it’s great to see customers are as enthusiastic about the wines as we are.”??BBPA calls for VAT cut?The British Beer & Pub Association is asking for a lower rate of duty on reduced-strength beer as part of a campaign to back the pub industry. It also wants to see the reversal of the duty increase imposed at the time of the VAT reduction and more support for pubs which serve food.

Get one tree with Palo Alto?Concha y Toro UK will be giving away saplings to consumers buying three bottles of its Palo Alto wine brand from mid-February. The Buy Three, Get One Tree offer is linked to the brand’s support for Trees for Cities, a UK-based tree-planting charity. The Chilean company’s Cono Sur brand will have a promotion with Blue Dragon stir-fry sauces in Waitrose, Sainsbury’s and Tesco, in the form of a money-off voucher and a competition to win a year’s supply of both brands.

From being a niche that expanded and contracted with the sunshine, rosé has subtly but steadily become a stalwart of many merchants’ ranges, with Provence firmly at the top and asked for by name.
