Jewell favourite for top Tesco wine job

25 June, 2010

Tesco is set to name its new senior product development manager for wine in the next few weeks, with Laura Jewell MW the hot favourite to land the post.

The position became available after Pierpaolo Petrassi MW moved to Waitrose as its BWS manager, replacing Justin Howard-Sneyd MW, who is now global wine director at Direct Wines.

Jewell joined Spar last May as wine trading controller, tasked with overhauling its entire range.

As a result, own-label sales grew by 56% in November last year alone, compared with the same month in 2008.

She also launched the retailer’s first wine festival in February as part of a drive to boost the supermarket’s wine credentials.

Jewell had previously spent three years as agency director of HWCG, following a stint in Sainsbury’s wine-buying team.

English wine: a happy harvest for Christmas

All across England and Wales, vineyards are being harvested. Down winding country lanes come armies of welly-wearing conscripts wielding secateurs and buckets, ready to reap the rewards of our vines. Happily they come, their cheeks ruddy with pride. Half an hour later they’re crawling over muddy clods with lacerated hands, drenched in claggy juice and cold sweat, as if ploughing through an endurance race.
