The city’s former lord mayor, Brian Griffiths, described as “bulls**t” the claims made by the store manager that the locality of the shop suffered from no drink-related problems.
Councillor Elizabeth Clark said she was “disgusted” by the behaviour of Sainsbury’s, which she said was selling cans of lager for 60p.
Sainsbury’s said the branch, which is currently licensed to sell alcohol between 7am and 6pm, is the only shop in its estate which does not match licensing hours with opening hours.
The application to sell alcohol until 11pm in the St Mary Street branch, which sits within a saturation zone, was rejected on police advice.
A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “We are disappointed with the outcome at the hearing and will be considering our options.”
