Muscadet in crisis distillation as producers face surplus

08 July, 2010

Muscadet producers are taking the unprecedented step of distilling surplus wines.

The crisis measure comes as producers are struggling to sell stock from 2008 and previous vintages and are pinning their hopes on a successful 2010 harvest.

The distillation scheme will mean growers will be paid to remove inventories of AO Muscadet, AO Muscadet Sèvre et Maine, AO Muscadet Coteaux de la Loire and AO Muscadet Côtes de Granlieu.

It is expected that between 65,000 to 80,000 hectolitres of Muscadet will be involved in the crisis distillation.
