Whisky specialist tries its hand at gin

A gin made with Scottish juniper, heather and milk thistle has been launched by Spencerfield Spirit.

The company – which also produces Sheep Dip and Pig’s Nose whiskies – said it saw the brand as being part of a new wave of gins, including Martin Miller’s and Hendrick’s, which are bringing interest to the category.

Spencerfield director Alex Nicol said: “When gin became the fashionable spirit in the 19th century, Edinburgh distillers produced a gin which was a direct copy of Dutch genever to cater for demand.

“Like the London distillers, they had everything they needed arriving in nearby Leith – sugar, spices, fruit and grain.

“We hope in a small way to revive Edinburgh’s fantastic distilling and liqueur manufacturing legacy and build upon it.”?The pack design is inspired by the art deco movement to reference “the glory days of cocktails”, the company said.

The gin is bottled at 43% abv and has an rrp of £23.99.

English wine: a happy harvest for Christmas

All across England and Wales, vineyards are being harvested. Down winding country lanes come armies of welly-wearing conscripts wielding secateurs and buckets, ready to reap the rewards of our vines. Happily they come, their cheeks ruddy with pride. Half an hour later they’re crawling over muddy clods with lacerated hands, drenched in claggy juice and cold sweat, as if ploughing through an endurance race.
