France notched up 21 trophies for its wines, followed by Japan’s sake category with 14, Australia with 12 and Portugal with 11. ?Germany, Italy and New Zealand were each awarded eight trophies. In total, 111 wines were awarded a trophy, while there were 14 Great Value Wines.
Chris Ashton, IWC event director, said: “The IWC has once again given support to the international wine market with these respected and influential awards. Winning a trophy or Great Value Wine award gives a wine real prestige.
“It is a well-earned recognition of the dedication and commitment that’s gone into producing a top-quality wine and puts the producers on the map.” The trophy stage is the final round in the IWC, where gold medal wines are tasted by an elite panel against other wines in the same category.
The guest judge was Oz Clarke, who joined IWC co-chairmen Tim Atkin MW, Sam Harrop MW, Charles Metcalfe and Derek Smedley MW on the judging panel.?
