Spar aims high after departures
Published:  23 July, 2010

Spar is hopeful of recruiting high-profile replacements for Laura Jewell MW and Dror Nativ, who have left the company to take roles at Tesco and Sainsbury’s.

Nativ, formerly Spar’s wine trading manager, has been recruited to Sainsbury’s buying team, a week after Jewell joined Tesco as product development manager (OLN, July 9).

Chris Lewis, Spar’s licensed trading director, admitted he was disappointed to see the pair leave but said he had already received applications from well-known figures within the industry for their roles.

He insisted their departures would not derail Spar’s programme to grow its wine category, which has seen sales increase by 10% over the past year.

“We’ve just done a range review, which has been the most successful and ambitious to date, and that goes live in September,” he said.

At Sainsbury’s, Nativ will specialise in Australian and New Zealand buying. He replaces Daniel Bracegirdle.

English wine: a happy harvest for Christmas

All across England and Wales, vineyards are being harvested. Down winding country lanes come armies of welly-wearing conscripts wielding secateurs and buckets, ready to reap the rewards of our vines. Happily they come, their cheeks ruddy with pride. Half an hour later they’re crawling over muddy clods with lacerated hands, drenched in claggy juice and cold sweat, as if ploughing through an endurance race.
