Portuguese talk up benefits of corks

Cork producers are to talk up what they claim are the environmental benefits of their product over plastic stoppers in a new campaign.

The Portuguese Cork Association (APCOR) has set up a website inviting consumers to “sign the pledge” to choose natural cork over synthetics. The campaign will encourage consumers to press retailers and producers to use cork.

APCOR said almost two-thirds of UK consumers are blind to the environmental impact of different forms of stoppers, despite 96% recycling their wine bottles.

It claims that once informed of the environmental benefits, 58% said they would choose wines with natural cork stoppers.

The campaign aims to tackle what APCOR says are commonly held myths about cork, including that trees are cut down in the course of production.

Some 22% of Britons admitted to believing this was true and 47% had no idea that trees were not harmed during the process.

Looking back to look forward

Wine is a liquid time capsule. Drinking older vintages not only recalls the weather conditions and winemaking styles of the past, it encourages us to reflect upon our own histories. Such reminiscence often inclines towards romanticised nostalgia. Especially after the second bottle. But looking back is a great way of learning about the future.
